Just in time for the new school year, four BigBelly Solar trash compactors have been installed at UMD. These outdoor units have bins for both recycling and trash.
Using energy gathered from solar panels, these self-powered machines compact trash inside the unit, allowing for a higher volume of refuse to be placed in the bin. This results in fewer collection trips for Facilities Management, saving staff time and reducing UMD's carbon footprint.
Outdoor waste management is especially important here at UMD, since Lake Superior lies only a short distance downhill from campus. Don't let your trash wind up in the lake- next time you're outside wondering what to do with your soda bottle check out a BigBelly, located:
Lot B in front of the Darland Administration Building
Lot C corner by Malosky Stadium
Ordean Court by the Sports and Health Center
Kirby Bus Hub
